8th Grade Week of 11-23-09

Monday:  “All Boxed In”

Learning Targets:  This is a performance assessment that will cover most of the learning targets in our 3-D solids unit. 

Tuesday:  Probability and Odds of simple events

Learning Target:  Students will find the probability of simple events

  • What is the probability of rolling the sum of 9 given two dice?
    • Students will work with a partner to come up with a reasonable solution to this problem.
  • What are odds?
    • How are probability and odds different?

8th Grade Math Week of 11-16-2009

Monday:  Volume and Surface Area of Prisms, Pyramids, Cones, & Cylinders

LT:  Students will find the volume of a prisms, pyramids, cones, and cylinder.

  • Jeopardy “Volume and Surface Area”
    • Students will find the volume and surface area of 3-dimensional solids through a Jeopardy game.
  • Students will complete a review sheet on finding the volume of pyramids and cones

Tuesday:  Assessment Review Day

LT:  Students will review the learning targets for this week’s assessment.

  • How did the students do on the practice worksheet about volume of pyramids and cones?
  • Station Rotation
    • Students will be placed in small groups and rotate through several stations with activities dealing with all the learning targets for tomorrow’s assessment.  
  • Class Discussion

Wednesday:  Weekly Assessment 1 Term 2

Learning Targets Covered; 

  • Students will create 3-d shapes using isometric dot paper.
  • Students will create nets of 3-d figures
  • Students will find the surface area of prisms and cylinders
  • Students will find the surface area of pyramids and cones
  • Students will find the volume of prisms and cylinders
  • Students will find the volume of pyramids and cones
  • Problem of the Week

Thursday:  3-D Unit performance assessment

LT:  Students will utilize the learning targets from the 3-d solids unit to complete a real world problem.

  • Manufacturing
    • Students will decide which type of box/container a company should use to sell a product.
    • Project will be due at the end of the period.

Friday Half Day:  Probability

LT:  Students will be introduced to our next unit on probability

  • Weekly Assessment review
    • Students will fill out a self-assessment and state a goal for the following week.

  • Finish volume problems from yesterday and discuss
  • More class practice on volume
  • Introduce Pyramids

Wednesday:  Treasure Chest Problem

LT:  Students will find the volume of a prism and cylinder.

  • Which treasure chest holds the gold?
    • Students will complete a performance assessment on volume of prisms
    • Also a LOGIC problem
  • Students are give clues to decide what each chest contains. 

Thursday:  Volume of a Pyramid and Cone

LT:  Students will find the volume of a pyramid and cone.

  • 5-minute check over volume of prisms and cylinders
  • How do you find the volume of a pyramid?
    • Class practice and discussion
  • How do you find the volume of a cone?
    • Class practice and discussion

Friday:  Volume & Surface Area of 3-D Solids

LT:  Students will find the surface area and volume of 3-d solids

  • Jeopardy
    • Separate the class into groups
    • Smart Board Jeopardy Game on volume & surface area.

    • Students will review nets

    • This net will have measurements on it
    • Students will have to transfer the measurements to the net
    • Find the area of a complex figure
  • How do you find surface area of different shapes?
    • Prisms
    • Pyramids
